lancaster according to slime.jpg

“Lancaster according to slime mould” asked the question: How would Lancaster streets look like if slime mould created them? Or perhaps how would a hypothetical metro system of Lancaster look like if slime mould was entering it? Inspired by the well known slime mould experiment on the Tokyo railway system, I challenged the slime mould to create a new set of connexions for Lancaster’s most important points.

I had to research the history of Lancaster and the maps of Lancaster because the way the city was shaped is informed by which building where there first and which connections where made first. So, I had to know which where the most relevant buildings of Lancaster and find out in which order they appeared. Then, for the slime mould I would substitute these buildings with food sources for the slime mould (oats) and add them throughout 7 days in the order they appeared in history. The links that the slime mould would create in between the food sources are the new streets of Lancaster according to the slime mould.

I filmed time lapse videos of the slime mould creating the new Lancaster and drew the shape of the new map. As well as the walk, I showed the experiment in an installation and in a sculpture.

For the sculpture I layered with glass the current street network of Lancaster and the new network that the slime mould came up with.
